Susan Pucin Shares Her Cancer Care Bag Project
Gurnee resident Susan Pucin joined Gurnee Rotary to share how her Cancer Care Bag initiative brings hope and comfort to chemotherapy patients at Lake Forest Hospital. Each handmade bag includes thoughtful items like mints, puzzles, tea, and cozy socks — plus heartfelt cards from students. With nearly 1,000 bags delivered over the years, Susan’s work is a shining example of compassion in action.

Diana Dretske Presents Lake County Civil War History
Diana Dretske, Curator and Lake County historian at the Bess Bower Dunn Museum, delivered a captivating program on her book The Bonds of War, which traces the lives of five Lake County men who served in the 96th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. Her storytelling connected past and present through personal narratives, many of which have descendants still living in the area. One of our most engaging and memorable programs.

Jim Elliott Shares Diveheart’s Mission of Adaptive Scuba Therapy
Jim Elliott, founder and president of Diveheart, presented an inspiring program on how adaptive scuba diving transforms the lives of individuals with disabilities. Diveheart is a Downers Grove-based nonprofit that helps children, adults, and veterans experience the freedom and therapeutic power of the underwater world. With a mission to help participants “Imagine the Possibilities,” Diveheart’s programs support those with physical, developmental, sensory, and psychological disabilities by offering a unique, weightless environment for healing and empowerment.

Josh Beadle Spotlights Three Brothers Theatre
Josh Beadle, founder and executive director of Three Brothers Theatre in Waukegan, joined Gurnee Rotary to share the story and mission of this dynamic local theater. Three Brothers is an artist-led organization offering a creative home for actors, directors, and designers while enriching northern Lake County with bold, engaging performances. From original works to community collaborations, the theater is a cultural anchor in downtown Waukegan. Thank you, Josh, for an inspiring and entertaining program!

District Governor Mary Bak Visits Gurnee Rotary
Gurnee Rotary was honored to welcome Mary Bak, 2023–2024 District Governor for Rotary International District 6440, which spans Chicago’s north, northwest, and western suburbs. A Glenview Sunrise Rotarian since 1991, Mary brings decades of leadership experience in local government and real estate development, along with a strong commitment to community service.
Her district-wide theme, “Create Hope in the World,” focuses on mental health awareness, empowering women and girls, and eradicating polio. We thank Mary for her inspiring visit and for leading the way across Rotary’s 65 clubs and 2,000 members in our region!

First Thursday Fellowship at Cooper’s Hawk
Rotary is about service — and great fellowship. On the first Thursday of each month, Gurnee Rotary skips the morning meeting and gathers for an evening happy hour at a local spot. Rotary Club of Gurnee President Randy Blaser presents a Paul Harris pin to member Jason Lind, recognizing his ongoing commitment and generous support of The Rotary Foundation.
The Paul Harris Fellow distinction honors members who contribute $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus, or other approved Rotary programs. Contributions like Jason’s help advance Rotary’s global efforts in health, education, peace, and clean water.

Congratulations to Gurnee Rotary President Mary Witte-Tabbert on completing a strong year of leadership.
